Short answer: Time-bin entanglement encodes a qubit in which of two time slots a photon arrives, which suits transmission through optical fibre. Three recent papers report compact photon-pair sources and fibre distribution, with Bell-state fidelities of about 94 to 98 percent in the authors' own measures. These are laboratory source demonstrations, and one of the three could only be checked through a mirror page.

Why time-bin encoding?

The 2024 Scientific Reports abstract describes telecom-wavelength, time-bin entangled photon pairs as ideally suited for distributing Bell pairs over fibre networks with low dispersion. A 2024 EPJ Quantum Technology paper adds a different motivation: quantum networks that run user-defined protocols beyond quantum key distribution will need fully controllable entangled states, so the available space of time-bin states needs to be expanded.

What did the hybrid photonic circuit achieve?

The Scientific Reports paper presents a fibre-pigtailed hybrid photonic circuit with nonlinear waveguides for photon-pair generation and a polymer interposer. The authors report 68 dB of pump suppression and photon separation with a polarizing beam splitter that has a polarization extinction ratio above 25 dB. They say the optical stability of the hybrid assembly improves the quality of entanglement, and that background suppression and photon routing reduce accidental coincidences. They report a concurrence of 96 percent and a fidelity of 96 percent to a Bell state, with asymmetric uncertainties given in the abstract. The paper's stated motivation is that quantum communication hardware should be compact, reliable and low cost, which is the authors' framing and not a statement about products.

What did the controllable source do?

The EPJ Quantum Technology paper demonstrates a time-bin entangled source producing states of the form alpha|00> plus beta|11> with fully controllable phase and amplitudes. Eight different two-photon states were selected and prepared. Photon pairs were generated at 2.4 MHz with a visibility of 0.9475 plus or minus 0.0016, violating the CHSH Bell inequality by 197 standard deviations. After distribution over 100 km of single-mode fibre, the authors report a visibility of 0.9541 plus or minus 0.0113 and a CHSH violation by 6 standard deviations. Average state fidelity was 0.9540 at the source and about 0.9353 after distribution. They conclude the states can potentially be controlled to a level applicable to long-distance quantum networks, which is a stated prospect.

What about a silicon chip?

A third source is a mirrored publication page on exa.ai, so its venue could not be confirmed here and it should be treated as an unreviewed summary. It describes a silicon chip generating 460,000 entangled photon pairs per second with 97.90 percent fidelity, with photons transmitted over 155 km of fibre described as deployed fibre with 66 dB loss, and over ultra-low-loss fibre spools. These figures are the abstract's own claims and we could not verify them against a journal page.

How to read this

The sources use different figures of merit, including concurrence, visibility and fidelity, and different fibre lengths, so the numbers are not a like-for-like ranking. They show source and link experiments, and do not show a working multi-user network. This post is based on abstracts and visible summary text and full texts were not checked.

FAQ

What is time-bin entanglement?

A qubit is encoded in the arrival time of a photon, so the entangled pair is described by early and late time slots. The 2024 abstracts describe it as suited to fibre links.

How well did the controllable source work after fibre?

After 100 km of single-mode fibre the authors report average fidelity of about 0.935 and a CHSH violation by 6 standard deviations.

What does pump suppression mean?

Photon pairs are made by a strong pump laser, which must be filtered out. The hybrid circuit paper reports 68 dB of pump suppression.

Is this a deployed network?

No. These are source experiments, and one source mentions deployed fibre only as a transmission test link.
